Insights into the factors controlling fluid circulation through the crust and the nature of fluid venting at the seafloor are first steps in understanding their effect on ocean properties and climate change. New data on the seafloor morphology, sub-surface sedimentary stratification, and water column of the sedimented Southern Trough hydrothermal field (Guaymas basin) were acquired during the BIG cruise in 2010. These data provide accurate and high-resolution information on the geological context of the vents, on the distribution of acoustic anomalies in the water column, and on the possible nature of the fluid generating these echoes. Defining active, inactive, and extinct seafloor massive sulfide deposits ArchiMer

Hydrothermal activity results in the formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, including seafloor massive sulfide deposits, at oceanic spreading ridges, arcs, and back-arcs. As hydrothermal systems age, the mineral deposits eventually become severed from the heat source and fluid-flow pathways responsible for their formation and become extinct. The timescales and processes by which this cessation of activity occurs, and the resultant distinction between hydrothermally active and inactive deposits has recently taken on policy implications related to the potential issuance of exploitation leases for seafloor massive sulfide deposits by the International Seabed Authority in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. The synthesis of organic molecules in hydrothermal fluids raises the question of what role hydrothermal vents may have played in the emergence of life on Earth. These deep‐sea ecosystems were most likely protected from extreme conditions at the surface (meteor showers and ultraviolet radiation). Since the middle of the 19th century, scientists have questioned the position of deep‐sea animals in the evolution of marine fauna, in the hope to discover the missing link, i.e. the species or group that may have survived mass extinctions in this protected and stable environment. Microbial colonization of basaltic glasses in hydrothermal organic-rich sediments at Guaymas Basin ArchiMer

Oceanic basalts host diverse microbial communities with various metabolisms involved in C, N, S, and Fe biogeochemical cycles which may contribute to mineral and glass alteration processes at, and below the seafloor. In order to study the microbial colonization on basaltic glasses and their potential biotic/abiotic weathering products, two colonization modules called AISICS ("Autonomous in situ Instrumented Colonization System") were deployed in hydrothermal deep-sea sediments at the Guaymas Basin for 8 days and 22 days. Seafloor Massive Sulfides from the Northern Equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge: New Discoveries and Perspectives ArchiMer

In addition to the two new hydrothermal fields Krasnov (l6 degrees 38' N) and Ashadze (13 degrees N) discovered in 2003-2004, some later discoveries were made in the Northern Equatorial segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Two new major seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits: Semyenov (13 degrees 31' N) and Zenith-Victory (20 degrees 08' N), as well as the now extended Puy des Folles hydrothermal field (20 degrees 30.5' N), provide enough data to make conclusions about the general characteristics of SMS deposits in the northern equatorial MAR environment.
